2006 So Far

The Club is currently taking orders for bottles of a limited edition of 100,Centenary labelled,10 year old Springbank Malt whisky priced at £26.50 per bottle. We are sure that these, if they remain unopened, will give an excellent return on the purchase price. The 2006 season got underway in glorious sunshine after numerous photos were taken of the current committee, the past presidents and the Centenary committee taken by local photographer John Gillespie, some of whose work is featured on www.visitkintyre.info The opening match between the President and Vice-President attracted 8 full rinks of 64 players and a large crowd of spectators and it was recorded for posterity on DVD by Bobby Cairns who is compiling a recording of the year's events. Bobby also recorded the "Stars in Your Eyes" show and is donating the proceeds of the DVD sales of this to Cancer Research. Steven Dickson and Jean Miller who beat David McCormick and Janie Hall in the final won the first competition of the season, the Derrick Goode Memorial Pairs. This was followed the next week by the Whyte & Mackay Pairs that was won by Willie Munro and Gavin Muir from Alec Black and John Morrison. On Saturday 13th May the club hosted the inter-county match between Argyll & Bute and West Dunbartonshire that was won comfortably by Argyll & Bute. The following day the one off Centenary triples was held on the bleakest day of the season so far and it was all credit to the players for making the best of the weather and serving up such a good competition. It was good to see two of the club’s talented juniors, Mark McCormick and Keith Dickson involved in the final with Mark teamed with the winners Hugh Newlands and Geoff Dunn and Keith with runners-up Robert Hendrie and Gavin Muir. The semi-finalists and finalists were awarded with unique keepsakes of the occasion. Saturday 21st May saw us on our travels “up the road” to Glasgow for a friendly match with our old friends at Kingston BC. The rain that was forecast to travel no further than the Borders somehow managed to travel north and settle over the south side of Glasgow and the match was curtailed to 11 ends due to this. The men’s match resulted in a comprehensive win for Kingston but I’m pleased to relate that the ladies salvaged the Club’s honour with a victory. The following day it was down the road to Greenock and a visit to our longest established away venue at the Ardgowan club who host our annual matches with the Greenock-Argyll touring party. Almost the two greens were full for a mixed match that we comprehensively won. After the game, President Malcolm was presented with two photographs, one a copy of the Greenock party that visited in July 1906 and another of a visit in 1986 presided over by yours truly. Aye there were a few sore heids on Monday morning. The next event was the Archie and May Graham Memorial Pairs on Sunday 28th May and John McLean and Alec Black won this from Jimmy McKerral and Dave Browning. This gave us a bit of breathing space before the Centenary week-end (see page 6) and our next home fixture on Saturday 17th June when the men hosted Kingston BC and Sunday 18th when the ladies played their Kingston counterparts. I’m pleased to report home victories on both occasions. The Open Pairs sponsored by Campbeltown Motor Company was held on Saturday 24th June and a classic final saw Jimmy Anderson and Alistair Mackay take the “Aquila” trophy from John McCormick and John Newlands in a replayed extra end.
